Puberty explained
Puberty is a natural stage of development when a child’s body changes into an adult body. It marks the start of physical and reproductive maturity and brings physical, hormonal, and emotional changes.
Puberty usually starts between ages 8 and 13 for girls and 9 to 14 for boys, but timing varies. Starting earlier or later is often normal.
Physically, the body grows quickly. In girls, breasts develop and periods begin; in boys, genitals develop and the voice deepens. Hair growth and sweating increase for everyone.
Hormones drive these changes and can affect emotions and behavior. Mood swings, sensitivity, and a stronger need for independence are common.
Puberty is also a time of learning. Teens build identity and confidence. It helps to ask questions and talk with trusted adults.
If changes seem very unusual or painful, consult a healthcare professional.
Understanding puberty makes this stage easier and less stressful.
